Although learning how to care for myself was probably the most important choice I ever made, it wouldn’t mean much if this taking care wouldn’t be the foundation to contribute to others. Most of the time, it is the other who makes me stretch for the extra mile.
Helping others is a very tricky subject. It isn’t obvious at all whether we actually help someone or not with a certain action, even if the intent seems clear. Much is related to the art of giving & receiving. There’s a huge difference between giving someone what they want or what they need.
A learning path I encountered over and over was that after having helped someone, at least from my point of view, I ended up being the “victim” of my own actions. These can be hurtful and difficult experiences. They made me question the whole idea of helping others many times over.
But each time I got to the same conclusion. Supporting others adds necessary meaning and value to our quest through life. It’s an ingredient in the fuel we need. It is the other that makes me go the extra mile. I also believe that the best way to give back to life, is by discovering and offering our unique expression of being to the world.
I incorporated my need to contribute in the very roots of the collection. A group of women gathered together in Ahmedabad and hand-painted every single hummingbird that comes with the collection. If I remember correctly, about 60.000 birds were colored with all-natural plant extracts. This way, these women were able to contribute to their families & spent an amazing time together. Without this project, these women wouldn’t be allowed to go outside, they have to work inside.
They infused each bird with their freedom in the form of joy, love & beauty.
