We all have different meanings attached to the words we use. It is often the cause of many misunderstandings. Adding to this is that what we say and what we mean isn’t always the same. If we would all have learned our vocabulary from the same dictionary, it would be different, but we don’t learn the meaning of words that way. We attach meaning from the context through which these words appeared into our lives.
A dream and a mission in the context of awakening out of the normal are very similar and can both provide for the functions they have to. If a dream evokes too much resistance, right out of the starting block, go with a mission. A dream is more connected to our heart and our childhood longings. A dream feels more playful and less serious than a mission and allows us to expand our imagination much easier.
Research in neuroscience shows that playfulness is as important as sleep and rest in high-performance activities. Play has always been an important factor in stress handling and our openness to explore. Playfulness cultivates our curiosity in favor of our fears when facing the unknown. Our play circuitry is very old and plays a far more important role in our survival than one might believe.
Seriously playful and playfully serious is what we’re aiming at.
It feels fair to say that a dream is more feminine and allows for more change and variation along the way than its masculine partner. Change is one of the main characteristics of the feminine. Direction not so much.
On the other side, we’re often told that dreams don’t exist. They’re not real. But neuroscience tells us that the brain does not know the difference between a dream and a life experience. What we experience as real is definitely not a straight forward matter.
Shamans consider the dream more real than what we experience during the day and call our daily experience a dream.
If awakening out of the normal is what we‘re aiming at, then a dream is the preferred choice over a mission. This is the context in which the dream fits. Just experiment, see what comes up, and chose something to start with.
